Lesson from the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Hebrews – c. 11, v. 24–26; 32–40
Brethren, through faith Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, when he was grown up. He preferred to share the hardships of the people of God rather than enjoy the temporary pleasures of sin. He considered Christian martyrdom more precious than all the treasures of Egypt . For he was looking forward to the ultimate reward in heaven.
I do not need to say more. For time would fail me, if I told you what Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets have achieved through faith. They conquered kingdoms, lived righteously, received new promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, found strength in their time of trial, became mighty in war, and put foreign armies to flight.
Some returned to their women from certain death as if by resurrection. Some were tortured, but refused to accept their release, because they wanted to inherit a better life after their resurrection. Others endured derision, floggings, chains, and imprisonment.
They were stoned, they were sawed asunder, they were tortured, they were put to the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, ill–treated by the world, which was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts, in mountains, in caves, and in the holes of the earth.
Yet, all these martyrs, although well attested by their faith, did not obtain the divine promises. Because God had something better in store for all of us. He wanted us all to reach the fulfillment of our hopes together.

A Reading From The Holy Gospel According To John:
At that time Jesus decided to go to Galilee . There he met Philip, who was from Bethsaida , the hometown of Andrew and Peter. Jesus said to Philip, "Come with me." Philip then found Nathanael and said, "We have found the one that Moses and the Prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth ." Nathanael asked, "Can anything good come from Nazareth ?" Philip answered, "Come and see." When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said, "Here is a true descendant of our ancestor Israel . And he isn't deceitful."? "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree." Nathanael said, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God and the King of Israel!" Jesus answered, "Did you believe me just because I said that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see something even greater .I tell you for certain that you will see heaven open and God's angels going up and coming down on the Son of Man."
(Jn. 1:43-51)

History of Lent

Because we did not fast we were banished from paradise.
So then let us fast so as to return
(St. Basil the Great. On Fasting 1)

Fasting has a long history. It is mentioned in all religions. But focusing on fasting in the Christian tradition, we go back to the Old Testament, which was preparing for the New.

Turning to the Old Testament we see respect for the fast, and understand its greatness and power. In fasting and obedience, Moses received the tablets on which God's hand had written the commandments of God. It was after fasting that Elijah saw God (as was possible for mortal man) for heavens being closed for three years and six months to turn the spiritual eyes of sinful people to their Creator and say, "Lord God of Israel lived before whom I stand! In these years there will be no dew or rain except at my word "(4 King 4, 39-41), the same imposed fast on people, for the remission of sins. Poisonous food, with consecrated prayer, the scribe Elisha was not harmed not only him but also his guests (4 King 4, 39-41). Daniel was unhurt, who after three weeks of fasting without food and water, was thrown into a pit of lions (Dan 6, 16-22).

Through not fasting, Isaav became a slave to his brother for food and sold by birthright (Genesis 25, 30-34). Prayer and fasting gave Samuel to his mother (1 Sam 1, 13-16). Fasting gave invincible power to the great hero Samson (Court 13, 4).

The New Testament refers to the forty fast of our Savior - Jesus Christ, who during forty days of fasting struggling with temptations of Satan. Alone with his disciples Jesus emphasizes to them the great force that expels demons, which can be by fast and prayer: "This type of demon cannot be driven out except by prayer and fasting" (Mk 9, 29).

For the history of Lent, it arises in times of the apostles. Then the first Christian community for day celebration of Passover, sets commemoration of Christ's suffering. Church historian Eusebius, referring to the testimony of St. Irenaeus of Lyons, who said that the original Passover was not a holiday limited one or a two day fast but to a forty day fast.

In the II-III centuries, to the Easter holiday a holy part was added - Resurrection Easter, a celebration of redemption. Those who called themselves followers of John - celebrated the Resurrection of Christ on the day of Passover, those who called themselves followers of Peter and Paul - celebrated on the Sunday following Passover, though, as observed by the renowned philosopher Socrates, no one had written confirmation. This matter was settled during the Council of Nicea in 325 year, which also was first mentioned about forty before Easter fast. In the third century, Lent lasted for 1 week, after the Council of Nicea - forty days. In 346, St. Athanasius emphasizes the importance of compliance of the forty fast before Easter: "He who ignores Forty and who seems unattended and unclean heart during the holy of holies, he does not celebrate the holiday of Passover."

Does Lent lasts 40 days? Although we call it the forty day fast, in practice in the Eastern Church, it is 36 and half days. Since the seven weeks of Lent exclude all Saturday and Sunday, excluding Saturday and half Great night before the feast of Passover.

Western church had a six-week fast, incomplete because of Sundays, so fast was 36 days. To have a forty day fast, the Roman Church in the VII century added 4 more days before the old fast.

Why 40 days? The number 40 is symbolic in the Bible. From the Old Testament, forty Flood (Genesis 7, 4), forty year search of the Holy Land of Israel (Num 14, 33), 40-day fast of Moses (Exodus 34, 28), forty day path to Mount Horeb Elijah (1 Kings 19, 8).

In the New Testament remember about taking of Jesus Christ to the temple on the fortieth day after Christmas, about forty day fasting of Jesus Christ (Matthew 4, 2), and 40 days after Resurrection, that Christ spent on earth (Acts 1, 2).

As for eating during the fast, in the first centuries there was no general established rules of fasting – some fasted by refusing all living foods, others - ate only fish, still others - fasted until evening, and then ate with restriction.

In the IV century, Pilgrim Eteri Sylvia says Lent monks: "Taking food after Mass on Sunday, do not eat until the Sabbath," and later on they said, "do not eat or pieces of bread or olives or vegetables, but only water and a little meat soup "- such food at a time called" dry meal ". Later Laodikeyskyy cathedral said to all the faithful: "After Forty day fast with dry meal." Saturday and Sunday not to fast, but these days eat only certain foods: bread, vegetables, fish, and sometimes milk.

In 1072-73, Kyiv Metropolitan George gives these instructions for Lent, "the first week of Lent: dry food ("suhoyadeniye"), that is bread, water and vegetables every day and nothing to drink. In the remaining weeks of fasting - Monday, Wednesday and Friday: dry food once a day, on Tuesday and Thursday: porridge (lentils) with olive oil or poppy once a day on Saturday and Sunday: fish (Bilecheskiy Charter, § 7).

At the same time holy Theodosius Caves in Kiev-Pechersk Monastery provides the following fast: the first 6 weeks of fast, food is used once a day the first week and all of Wednesday and Friday it was the dry food in those days it was forbidden to take wine to all, except for patients and used instead of wine prepared beverages with cumin, pepper and anysu, and on other days eating and herb porridge without oil. In the following weeks were allowed to take a glass of wine a day. And on Saturday and Sunday could eat twice a day and drink wine.

Cathedrals held a somewhat weakened strict fasting. Zamoyski Synod (1720) allowed the use of dairy products (Title, XVI). Synod of Lviv (1891) did not allow dairy products but allowed the use of meat on certain days provided certain prayers were said.

After the Second Vatican Council was a significant reduction of all fasts. From the decision of the Major Archbishop Joseph Slipoho (1966), it appears that our faithful are obliged not to use meat and dairy products on the first day of Lent and Good Friday, and abstain from meat every Friday during whole year. Although this decision is somewhat weakens the physical fasting, for a number of reasons we are unable to fast as strictly as our ancestors used to fast, but it emphasizes the spiritual aspect of fasting. We are committed to fast spiritually: pray, meditate on the Bible, think about our sins, correct them, but to do good works and bring ourselves virtue.

That spiritual growth through confession, love of neighbor and work on yourself is the purpose of Lent.
